Endeavours

Her fascination with the world of illustration for children led Martineau to create works of joy and light as a way of staving off the sadness and shadows that darken society today. In her art, she seeks to allow gaiety to emerge as the leitmotif.

The outsized eyes of her figures draw attention to their stare while at the same time, since they are hardly representative of reality these eyes give the works something of the slightly comical and caricatured. Whether the characters’ faces are seen in profile, looking downwards or straight into the eyes of the observer, they can both seduce and elicit smiles.
